Prayer shawls have been made for centuries. They are universal and embracing, symbolic of an inclusive, unconditionally loving, God. They wrap, enfold, comfort, cover, give solace, warmth & beautify. St. Edward’s is blessed to have many gifted crafters who have embraced this ministry.
In addition to providing shawls to our parishioners we regularly offer them and prayer blankets to Hospice. I would like to share what happened when a Chaplain presented a prayer shawl recently to the spouse of a Hospice patient in their words: “Last week, we gave a red/yellow and blue striped shawl to a woman whose husband was a patient. It was her birthday and her grandchildren were celebrating with her. She wrapped her oldest grandchild in the shawl and said, ‘There will be times when we’ll sit in Poppy’s chair, wrap ourselves in this and remember him’. It was one of those Chairos (God’s time) moments when something almost magical happened and the family was held in grace, wrapped in love, and lifted up in prayers. Her husband died that night.”
Our Prayer Shawl Ministry at St. Edwards is broader than Shawls as we also make Binky Caps, Crib Blankets, and Buntings. Articles are knitted, crocheted, quilted & loomed. They are given to adults and children that are in need of prayer because of health or other circumstance. If you are interested in joining this group and knit, crochet or quilt, please come! We gather the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 1:00 pm. Patterns are available and donations of yarn are greatly appreciated.
If you would like to request a shawl on someone’s behalf please call the parish office.
