Text of Reflection:
December 5, 2007

How do we not let the “Holiday” season interfere with Advent?  So often, we get caught up in the mass commercialism of our society.  We spend hours waiting in line to purchase the “hot item” of the season. Everywhere we go, we are bombarded with media messages of what constitutes the perfect gift to bring true happiness to ourselves and our loved ones.  But in doing so, I think we lose the true meaning of this beautiful and holy season.

We need to stop ever so briefly and truly reflect on the miracle and beauty of God.

All around nature is hibernating.  The days are short and the nights are long.  We are waiting and anticipating the birth of our Savior.  The Lord is our shepherd; He will lead and guide us in right paths.  Even though the days are short and the nights are long, God is guiding us through our journey.

Our faith and our commitment to God will give us the strength and peace to deal with the challenges that life can present.  Open our eyes and hearts to the subtle and at times not so subtle messages from God.  Our faith will sustain us more than any other “must” have material gift of the season.
By reflecting on the true meaning of Advent and Christmas, we can find peace and happiness and appreciate the beauty of this joyful season.
